Signs of Trouble – 5 Red Flags for Your Truck’s Spindles
As the Missouri foliage changes and the mornings turn crisp, October brings a shift in road conditions. With the harvest in full swing and the holiday shipping rush looming, your equipment is likely working overtime. At United Axle Missouri, we’ve found that most catastrophic spindle failures don’t happen without warning. Your trailer usually tries to tell you there’s a problem long before the wheel locks up on I-44.
Knowing what to look for can be the difference between a scheduled 3-hour mobile repair and a dangerous, multi-day roadside emergency. Here are the five red flags every Missouri driver and fleet manager should watch for this month:
1. The “Glitter” in the Oil
During your pre-trip, check your hubcaps. If the oil looks like metallic paint or has visible “glitter” swirling in it, you have a major problem. Those are physical shards of your bearings or the spindle itself. Once metal-on-metal contact starts, the heat rises exponentially.
2. Uneven Tire Wear (Scrubbing)
Are your trailer tires wearing prematurely on just the inside or outside edge? This “scrubbing” is often a sign of a bent or misaligned spindle. Even a slight deviation—caused by a heavy pothole hit or a poor previous weld-on repair—will cause the tire to drag rather than roll. United Axle’s threaded technology ensures perfect concentricity to stop this profit-killing wear.
3. Abnormal Hub Temperature
A simple infrared heat gun is one of the best tools in your cab. After a long haul between St. Louis and Kansas City, check the temperature of your hubs. If one is significantly hotter than the others, your bearings are likely failing or your brakes are dragging, both of which will eventually “cook” the spindle.
4. Unusual Vibrations or Noises
If you feel a rhythmic vibration through the mirrors or hear a low-frequency humming or growling from the trailer, don’t ignore it. A failing bearing often “chucks” or vibrates, which can score the spindle surface and eventually lead to the bearing welding itself to the axle.
5. Smoking or Leaking Seals
A “wet” wheel—where oil is sprayed across the rim—means your seal has failed. Without lubricant, the spindle has zero protection against friction. If you see smoke, the oil has already reached its flashpoint, and a spindle failure (or fire) is imminent.
Don’t Wait for the Breakdown
October is the time to be proactive. If you notice any of these red flags while moving freight through Springfield or across the state, give United Axle Missouri a call. Because our process is mobile, we can meet you at your terminal or a truck stop to inspect and replace the spindle before it fails on the highway.
Our serviceable threaded spindles are designed to handle the stresses of heavy hauling, ensuring that once we fix the problem, your “red flag” days are behind you.
